The Druids
From the chronicles of Sabyon
My first memories... I remember being deep within a forest.
I must have been sleeping, because when I woke up, I woke up
to pitch black darkness. The only thing I could discern was
the thick fog that slowly drifted around me, as if it was a
solid object crawling on air, merely inches from the forest floor.
I was wrapped in a strange blanket of sorts, cleverly made
from leaves and saplings, and reinforced with sturdy branches.
I did not think much of it at that time, I was merely a child
after all, but later on I have come to acknowledge the skill and
finesse employed to create this blanket, which acted as a shell
towards the rain and wind, and as cover when I needed to hide.
This first night, I sat completely still, too paralyzed by fear
to move, until I saw the luminous light forming in the sky. The
light from the sun shred through the forest, like an arrow speeds
towards its target. Mercilessly. Accurately. And at this day, my life began.
I swore to myself that I would find my way out of the forest before
the darkness descended again, so my journey began at dawn. Quickly did
I realize that I had no idea where I was, and more importantly, no idea
where to go, and how to get there. I wandered aimlessly for what seemed
an eternity. Being utterly alone, I wondered why it was so. Within buried
and denied memories I found glimpses of others like me. Other people.
Why was I here? Did someone leave me here? I did not know why, but I had a
feeling I was left alone for a purpose. A purpose I had to find out for myself.
I was discouraged, but yet I kept going. Late in the day, I arrived at a
clearing. Lying on the forest floor was an animal, badly wounded by the
look of it. It had reddish fur, with a white-tipped tail. I did not know
its name, so I did not call it by one either. I put my blanket down, and
gently nestled the animal inside it, and then gathered some branches from
the ground to build a small fire. Little did I know that this clearing was
going to be my home for the next eighty years. With berries, warmth, and care,
I kept the small animal alive. And gradually, it became better, until weeks
later, it had fully recovered. By then, we had become a pair, the two of us.
Unseperatable, and unyielding in the loyalty towards each other. I had saved
its life, but in many ways, it had saved mine too. I had found my purpose.
It was the beginning of a new life, and a long friendship.
