Communication and emotes
Hopefully you are not MUDding just to kill rabbits .. until you can kill orcs
.. until you can kill trolls and giants. So you will want to communicate with
other players and even some of the NonPlayerCharacters (NPCs). Here is a brief
summary of the commands that you will need for this.
The essential speech commands are: say and @say
and emote, although ask
is useful too. However there are many variations that I explain in the advanced
sections that will allow you to roleplay your character in a more controlled
way and present yourself exactly as you would want. For the sake of originality
we will call your character Fred.
say |
say Hello, how are you?
Fred says: Hello, how are you? |
Actually, you will speak in a particular language, either the language of your
race which you speak perfectly from the start, or the common langauge: Xyllic.
You begin as merely good in this language, which means that you will not recognise
some words. So if this happens, the person you are talking to is probably not
just typing garbage.
@say |
@say Help me, I don't understand.
<OOC> Fred: Help me, I don't understand.
|
This should not be used to get around the fact that your character does not
speak common tongue as in-character communication. But someone you ask for help
might use it to explain command syntax to you out-of-character to be sure you
understand their words.
ask |
ask jim How are you?
Fred asks Jim in xyllic: How are you?
Fred asks you in xyllic: How are you? |
This command is used by most players only for asking a question to an NPC,
or computer controlled character as this is how to test if they know something
about a particular subject. However some players who like to be particularly
accurate with the commands they type will use this command anytime that they
ask a question of another player.
Obviously the language will change if you are speaking in one of the racial
or guild tongues that the game provides.
Asking things to an NPC is usually a case of asking them about a single word
to which they will either have a response or else they will show that they don't
have an answer. Usage:
|
ask human help
ask human job |
Emote is used to show the emotions of your character without him or her actually
saying that they are happy or sad. There are some shortcuts built into the game
for this that allow less control over how exactly your character looks.
emote |
emote looks down at the ground and sighs slightly.
Fred looks down at the ground and sighs slightly.
grin
Fred grins evilly. |
The grin would automatically default to an evil grin. This can be controlled
by typing one of the adverbs that the game allows after the command:
|
grin happily
Fred grins happily. |
You can direct shortcut emotes to a particular person too, for example:
|
grin jim happily
Fred grins happily at Jim.
Fred grins happily at you. |
From this point the usage of the commands gets more complicated. You don't
need to know the commands below to roleplay well, but if you do know them it
opens up new ways to present your character as you want them presented to others
in the MUD.
